Veronica's Room
by Ira Levin
 |
February 27-28 & March 6-7 2009
at 8 p.m.
The elderly couple are so amazed that Susan looked
exactly like long dead Veronica. When they asked her to come home and
pretend to be Veronica to make a dying old woman happy, it seemed like
such a small thing to ask. But suddenly, things aren't going the way Susan
expected. As a child, Susan was told by her mother, not to talk to
strangers. Susan should have listened.
"Veronica's Room," written by celebrated playwright Ira
Levin, is a totally absorbing spider's web entwining fantasy and reality.
Levin is world-renowned for ''Deathtrap,'' his Broadway thriller, as well
as for ''Rosemary's Baby,'' his novel of the supernatural.
One famous theatre critic described "Veronica's Room"
in this way: "It's like being trapped in someone else's nightmare . . .
with a jarring and surprising climax."
The Village Voice summed up "Veronica's Room" as a
"neat, elegant thriller."

Play On!
by Rick Abbot
|
March 27-28, April 3-4 2009
at 8 p.m.
The Melrose School, Federal Road, Brewster, NY
This is the hilarious story of a theater group trying desperately to
put on a play in spite of maddening interference from a haughty authoress
who keeps revising the script. Act I is a rehearsal of the dreadful show,
Act II is the near disastrous dress rehearsal, and the final act is the
actual performance in which anything that can go wrong does. When the
authoress decides to give a speech on the state of the modern theatre
during the curtain calls, the audience is treated to a madcap climax to a
thoroughly hilarious romp.

Annual Evening of One Acts

|
June 5 & 6 2009 Local authors showcase their original works and directors bring out humor and drama with the talents of a diverse cast.
Annual ‘Evening of One-Acts’ Affairs of the Heart
Affairs of the Heart
will be the subject of several one-act plays and teen monologues, some by local
playwrights, to be presented at The Brewster Theater Company’s sixth annual
Evening of One-Acts. Conflict, humor and tenderness reach across the generations
in this wide array of pieces, offering roles for actors of all ages. With a
compressed rehearsal cycle and short, manageable roles, this is a perfect
opportunity for experienced actors with limited time to ‘keep their hand in’ or
for new actors who just want to ‘get their feet wet’.

BYE BIRDIE is one of the most captivating musical shows of our time. It is
a satire done with the fondest affection, and tells the story of a rock
and roll singer who is about to be inducted into the army. An English
Teacher, What Did I Ever See in Him?, Put on a Happy Face, One Boy, A Lot
of Livin' to Do, Kids, Rosie and Spanish Rose are musical
theatre classics. This is the tops in imagination and good old fashion
fun.

October 16th, 17th, 23rd and 24th
8 p.m.
In a small town dime store in West Texas, the "Disciples of James Dean"
gather for their twentieth reunion. Now middle-aged women, they were
teenagers when Dean filmed Giant two decades ago in nearby Marfa.
One of them, an extra in the film, has a child whom she says was conceived
with Dean during the shoot. The ladies' congenial reminiscences mingle
with flash backs to their youth; then the arrival of a stunning but
familiar stranger sets off a series of confrontations that smash their
delusions and expose bitter disappointments.

The One and Only Santa Claus isn’t your standard
Christmas play. It is a series of sketches around the house, the
neighborhood and the North Pole about a TV crew trying to find Santa for a
photo-op and an interview. The crew of adults never does get to see him
but the kids in the audience, big ones as well as little ones, see him
many times. The adult TV people do get very close to Santa at the end and,
instead of an interview, get the Christmas Spirit.
With a list of characters that includes Yul Tide, Chrystal Flakes, Winter
Von Derland and Mary Christmas and the bumbling interplay among them and
the TV crew members, the play is a joyful, funny way to celebrate the
Christmas Season. The cast is made up of both local adults and children.
After all, someone had to play Santa’s elves!
Directed by Vicky Barbalato and produced by Nancy D'Angelo, the holiday
production features actors from Brewster and the surrounding area.

The Lion in Winter
by James Goldman

|
January 2010
Performances are scheduled for January 22, 23, 29 and 30 at 8 pm at St
Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 26 Prospect Street, Brewster, NY. Tickets are
$/10 adults and $/8 seniors.
King Henry II of England has three sons by Eleanor of Aquitaine:
Richard, Geoffrey and John. He wants the kingdom to stay united after his
death, but all three sons want to rule and it is likely to be torn apart
by revolution. Henry favors the youngest son while Eleanor favors the
eldest. The middle son hopes to play both ends against each other and come
out on top. Henry would like to have another heir by his mistress, but
that would only add to the contenders. Uneasy is the head on which the
crown lies, and uneasy the truce between a matchless king and queen. This
mundane history is glorified in language that is brilliant in its ability
to characterize, its rhetorical impact, its actability, and its generative
power. Few since Shakespeare have had such a marvelous gift for truly
comic repartee.
