FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

‘If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh…
otherwise they'll kill you.’
Oscar Wilde
Irish dramatist, novelist, & poet (1854 - 1900)

Irish dramatist Oscar Wilde’s belief that the truth is best served with a healthy dose of laughter is realized as The Brewster Theater Company brings his comedy The Importance of Being Earnest to the stage. Produced by Ryan Dietzen and directed by Debbie Levin, The Importance of Being Earnest will be performed on October 12th, 13th, 19th and 20th at 8 p.m. at The Melrose School, 120 Federal Road, Brewster, NY.

Known as Oscar Wilde’s most hilarious play, The Importance of Being Earnest centers around a pun on the name "Ernest." John Worthing is "Jack" in the country and "Ernest" in the city. He has met his true love, Gwendolyn, in the city, which he thinks will work out very well for she will only marry a man named Ernest. But what happens when Gwendolyn unexpectedly visits him in the country and finds out who he really is? As Oscar Wilde wrote, "The truth is rarely pure and never simple."

This show features Daniel Bayer (Danbury, Ct) as John Worthing and Rachel Halko (Bedford Hills) as Gwendolyn. Rounding out the cast are Ryan Dietzen (Lake Carmel), Laurel Leitteri (Mount Vernon), Ella Luckett (Yorktown Heights), Regina Sweeney (Mahopac), and Alex Vournazos (Danbury).
Levin, a seasoned director who also serves as the president of BTC, didn’t hesitate to sign on when the company selected this show as its 2007 main stage production. Although a period play, Levin is quick to point out that this show is as funny and relevant today as it was 120 years ago. The comic moments are layered – engaging characters who find themselves trapped in a maze of contradictions, clever word play, and a fair share of slapstick moments make Earnest a play that will appeal to all audiences. Praising Wilde as a ‘master wordsmith’, Levin acknowledges that the biggest challenge will be to find ways to deliver the comic opportunities most effectively. No doubt that Levin is up to the job, having previously directed Steel Magnolias, Nunsense and Moon Over Buffalo for the company.

Tickets for this show are $13 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Go to www.brewstertheatercompany.org or call 845-598-1621 for reservations and additional information.
